Full art is the one Pokemon card style that has never gone out of fashion. It started in Japan in December 2010, and every generation since — EX, GX, V, VMAX, ex — has kept building on the same idea: art that runs off the edge of the card.
Twelve of the strongest Japanese full art prints we’ve handled are below, spanning five different printed rarity tiers from the 2016 Sun & Moon era through the 2025 Mega era. If you want the full history and how to identify a full art card in hand, our full art Pokemon cards guide covers that in depth — this article is the ranked picks that guide points to.
A note on terms before the list: “full art” describes the artwork treatment, not a single rarity. The printed Japanese labels underneath that umbrella vary by era — SR, HR, SAR, AR and MA all appear below — and we’ve flagged exactly which label sits on which card.
Twelve Japanese full art picks across five printed rarities (SR, HR, SAR, AR, MA), 2016–2025. Our PSA 10 listings run from Mega Lucario ex (MA) at ¥7,348 (~$46) up to Lillie (SR) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) at ¥1,540,000 (~$9,686). These are editorial picks, grouped by rarity tier and era rather than ranked “best ever.”
Prices below are our own PSA 10 listings, converted at ¥159/USD (September 2026).
What Counts as a Full Art Pokemon Card
As our full art Pokemon cards guide lays out, “a Full Art card is one where the illustration and holofoil extend across the entire card face.” The first ones were Japan’s Black Collection and White Collection, released 2010-12-17 — the English Black & White set followed on 2011-04-25. Critically, “‘Full Art’ is a visual category… not a rarity itself.” The printed Japanese labels that carry full art artwork include SR, SAR, AR, CHR, CSR and UR, and historically “the Japanese rarity label for Full Art cards was SR.”
The picks below span five of those printed tiers, plus one Mega-era letter tier we define without expanding:
- SR (Secret Rare) — the SwSh/SM-era full art label for V, GX and Supporter cards, numbered above the set’s official total.
- HR (Hyper Rare) — the SwSh-era rainbow-foil tier. Alt-art VMAX cards such as Glaceon VMAX and Mew VMAX below are printed HR, not SR or SAR — see our HR rainbow rare guide for how the tier works.
- SAR (Special Art Rare) — the Scarlet & Violet-era (2023–) full art label for ex and Supporter cards, EN-equivalent “Special Illustration Rare.”
- AR (Art Rare) — the SV-era full art label for non-ex Pokemon.
- MA — a Mega-era (2025→) tier letter. We define it by the letter only; see our Japanese rarity symbols guide for what each letter stands for.
You’ll also see “SA” used a lot in collector conversation — including in this article’s shorthand. It is not a printed Japanese rarity; it’s community shorthand for an alternate-art SR or HR card. The structural difference between “SA” and the newer SAR label is its own topic, covered in our SA vs SAR guide.
Our Picks: 12 Japanese Full Art Cards
Grouped by tier rather than strict print date: the SwSh/SM-era SR and HR full arts lead, then the SV-era SAR run, then AR, then the newest Mega-era MA print. Prices link straight to our current PSA 10 listing for each card.

For eeveelution full arts specifically, our PSA 10 eeveelutions buying guide and Moonbreon Umbreon VMAX value guide go deeper.
3. Mew VMAX — S8 Fusion Arts 119/100 (HR)

Printed HR, illustrated by AKIRA EGAWA, released 2021-09-24. Like Glaceon VMAX above, this is one to double-check against a printed SR — the rainbow-foil HR treatment is a different tier entirely. Our PSA 10 is currently listed at ¥246,840 (~$1,552) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order).
4. Pikachu & Zekrom GX — SM9 Tag Bolt 101/095 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) (SR)

11. Pikachu — S12a VSTAR Universe 205/172 (AR)

Printed AR, not SAR — the AR tier covers full art non-ex Pokemon and most commonly turns up in SV-era sets, but it actually began with S12a VSTAR Universe in December 2022, a few weeks before Scarlet & Violet’s own debut, and this Pikachu is one of those earliest AR prints. Illustrated by Kouki Saitou, released 2022-12-02. Our PSA 10 is currently listed at ¥91,526 (~$576) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order).

| Mega Lucario ex 228/193 | Mega Dream ex (M2a) | MA | ¥7,348 (~$46) |
The spread is wide on purpose — a full art doesn’t have to be expensive to be a genuine full art. The MA-tier Mega Lucario ex and the AR-tier Pikachu both show the full-bleed treatment at a fraction of the SR/HR-era prices above them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a Pokemon card “full art”?
A Full Art card is one where the illustration and holofoil extend across the entire card face. It’s a visual category, not a rarity itself — the printed Japanese rarity underneath varies (SR, HR, SAR, AR and others).
What was the first full art Pokemon card?
The first Full Arts were released in Japan’s Black Collection and White Collection on 2010-12-17. The English Black & White set followed on 2011-04-25.
Is “SA” a real Pokemon card rarity?
No. “SA” is community shorthand for an alternate-art card, not a rarity printed on any Japanese card. The cards people call “SA” are printed SR or HR depending on the set and era.
What’s the difference between SAR and AR?
Both are Scarlet & Violet-era full art tiers. SAR (Special Art Rare) covers ex Pokemon and Supporter cards; AR (Art Rare) covers full art non-ex Pokemon.
Are Japanese full art cards different from English ones?
The artwork and rarity structure are shared globally, but Japanese sets release first and carry their own printed rarity labels and card numbers, which sometimes differ from the English release.
Where can I buy these Japanese full art cards?
All twelve PSA 10s above are linked to their current listing. For a card not shown here, use our Quick Order page to request it directly from Tokyo.
