Umbreon, Darkrai, Zoroark, Roaring Moon — plenty of fan-favourite Pokemon share one thing on the card itself: Darkness printed as their TCG type. Collectors call it “Dark type,” but the game’s own rulebook calls it Darkness, and that distinction decides which cards actually belong on a list like this one.
We pulled together 12 Japanese Darkness-type prints we’d point a collector toward, spanning nine sets released between 2018 and 2025, and priced every one against our own PSA 10 stock rather than third-party market data. We ship all of it from Tokyo with tracked delivery worldwide.
Darkness is the official TCG type — “Dark type” is the shorthand collectors use. We cover 12 Japanese Darkness-type picks across nine sets, from the Umbreon ex SAR (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) (¥102,190) down to the MEGA Scrafty ex (¥4,895). Gengar is not on this list — it prints as Psychic type, not Darkness.

What Counts as a Dark Type Pokemon Card
In the Pokemon Trading Card Game, the official energy type is called Darkness, not “Dark” — collectors use “dark type” as shorthand, and we do the same here, but every card in this guide is confirmed to carry Darkness as its printed energy type on the card itself, checked against each card’s own listing on Limitless where available, and against the card’s own printed image when a Limitless listing couldn’t be reached.
That distinction matters because plenty of Pokemon that read as “dark” in flavour or design are not Darkness type on the card. Gengar, for instance, prints as Psychic type across its Japanese sets, not Darkness — if you’re after Gengar specifically, our Gengar cards guide covers those separately. One more note before the list: official Japanese rarity codes are things like SR, HR, SAR and AR. “Alt art” and “SA” are collector shorthand for certain SR/HR prints, not official print marks — we give the official code first throughout and use “alt art” only as a description.

1. Umbreon ex — SV8a Terastal Fest ex, 217/187 (SAR)
Illustrated by YASHIRO Nanaco and released December 6, 2024, this Special Art Rare is the newest Umbreon chase print on our list. Currently listed at ¥102,190 (~$643) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10.
2. Umbreon VMAX — S8b VMAX Climax, 245/184 (CSR)
Illustrated by kawayoo and released December 3, 2021, this Character Super Rare puts Umbreon into VMAX Climax’s oversized character-art treatment. 3. Umbreon & Darkrai GX — SM12a Tag All Stars, 182/173 (SR, alt art)
This tag-team print pairs two Darkness-type Pokemon on one card and is the priciest pick on this list. 4. Darkrai GX (Shiny) — SM8b GX Ultra Shiny, 230/150 (SSR)

5. N’s Zoroark ex — SV9 Battle Partners, 131/100 (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) (UR)

6. N’s Zorua — SV9 Battle Partners, 108/100 (AR)
Illustrated by Megumi Mizutani and released the same day as its evolution above, this Art Rare is the more affordable entry point into the same Battle Partners subset. 7. Roaring Moon ex — SV4K Ancient Roar (古代の咆哮), 090/066 (SAR)

8. Roaring Moon ex — SV8a Terastal Fest ex, 218/187 (SAR)

9. Tyranitar V — S5I Single Strike Master (一撃マスター), 077/070 (SR, alt art)
Illustrated by HYOGONOSUKE and released January 22, 2021, this alt-art SR is one of the earlier Sword & Shield-era Darkness prints on this list. 10. Team Rocket’s Murkrow — SV10 Glory of Team Rocket (ロケット団の栄光), 106/098 (AR)

11. Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex — M2a Mega Dream ex (メガドリームex), 243/193 (SAR)
Illustrated by Ligton and released November 28, 2025, this is one of the newest Darkness prints in the Mega Dream ex set. Currently listed at ¥8,800 (~$55) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) in PSA 10.
12. Mega Scrafty ex — M2a Mega Dream ex, 231/193 (MA)
Illustrated by Taiga Kasai and released alongside Grimmsnarl ex above. MA is the printed rarity mark on the card; Limitless files it as Secret Rare. Currently listed at ¥4,895 (~$31) in PSA 10.
