Search “ghost type Pokemon cards” and you’ll expect a stack of cards with a Ghost energy symbol in the corner. There isn’t one — the Pokemon Trading Card Game has never had a Ghost energy type, so every Ghost-type Pokemon from the games gets printed under a different type entirely, and which one depends on the set.
That makes “best Ghost-type cards” a genuinely interesting question rather than a simple list. Gengar alone has been printed as Psychic and as Darkness depending on the era. Fire/Ghost Pokemon like Ceruledge print as Fire. Fighting/Ghost Marshadow prints as Fighting. We pulled together twelve of the strongest Japanese prints across this roster — Gengar, Mimikyu, Gastly, Haunter, Ceruledge, Skeledirge, and Marshadow — with the printed type, the set, and our own current PSA 10 listing price for each.
There is no Ghost energy type in the Pokemon TCG. Ghost-type Pokemon print mostly as Psychic, but the Gengar line breaks that rule as Darkness in several modern sets, and dual-typed Ghosts like Ceruledge (Fire/Ghost) and Marshadow (Fighting/Ghost) follow their other type instead. Our top pick by price is the Gengar & Mimikyu GX SR SA (Tag Bolt 103/095) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order), currently listed at ¥608,740; the Mimikyu V CSR (VMAX Climax 233/184) (update: currently sold out — restock requests via Quick Order) is a more accessible entry point at ¥27,529.
PSA 10 prices below are our own current listings as of September 2026, converted at ¥159/USD.
What Counts as “Ghost-Type” in the Pokemon TCG
There is no Ghost energy type on a Pokemon card — the TCG’s type list skips straight from Grass and Psychic to Fighting, Darkness, Metal, Fairy, Dragon and Colorless, with nothing for Ghost. The Psychic type absorbs most of the gap: it “contains most Psychic- and Ghost-type Pokemon found in the main series video games,” per Bulbapedia. That’s why Gastly, Gengar (in most eras), and the majority of Mimikyu prints all carry the Psychic symbol.
The Gengar line is the biggest exception. It prints as Darkness in the SWSH-era High-Class Deck (Gengar VMAX, SGG 020/019) and again across the 2024–25 SV/MEGA era, including Gastly (SV5K 080/071), Haunter (MBG 022/021) and MEGA Gengar ex (M2a 240/193). Dual-typed Ghost Pokemon generally print under whichever of their two video-game types isn’t Ghost: Ceruledge and Skeledirge (Fire/Ghost) print as Fire, Marshadow (Fighting/Ghost) prints as Fighting, and Giratina (Ghost/Dragon) — see the alt-art Giratina V SA (S11 111/100) illustrated by Shinji Kanda, sourced via Quick Order rather than currently listed on our site — prints as Dragon. Mimikyu (Ghost/Fairy) has moved between typings too: Fairy on the Sun & Moon-era Mimikyu GX (SM7b 054/050), while every other print we cover here — including the Sun & Moon-era Mimikyu CHR (SM11b 058/049) — is printed Psychic.
We selected the Pokemon below because they carry the Ghost type in the video games, per Bulbapedia’s Ghost-type roster (as of Generation IX, 76 Pokemon are Ghost-type). What matters when you’re holding the card, though, is the type actually printed on it — which is what we’ve labelled for every entry below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a Ghost energy type in the Pokemon TCG?
No. The Pokemon TCG has never had a Ghost energy type. Most Ghost-type Pokemon from the video games are printed as Psychic-type cards instead, with several notable exceptions covered above.
Why does Gengar sometimes print as Darkness instead of Psychic?
The Gengar line breaks from the usual Psychic default in the SWSH-era High-Class Deck (Gengar VMAX 020/019) and again across the 2024–25 SV/MEGA era, including Gastly (SV5K 080/071), Haunter (MBG 022/021) and MEGA Gengar ex (M2a 240/193) — all printed as Darkness.
What type do Ceruledge and Skeledirge print as?
Fire. Both are Fire/Ghost dual-typed in the video games, and Pokemon TCG cards for dual-typed Ghosts generally follow the non-Ghost half — the same rule that puts Marshadow (Fighting/Ghost) under Fighting and Giratina (Ghost/Dragon) under Dragon.
Has Mimikyu always printed as Psychic?
Not always. Mimikyu (Ghost/Fairy) printed as Fairy on the Sun & Moon-era Mimikyu GX (SM7b 054/050), but every other print we cover here — including the Sun & Moon-era Mimikyu CHR and the Sword & Shield-era Mimikyu V CSR listed above — is printed Psychic.
Which Ghost-type Pokemon card in this line-up is the most valuable?
The Gengar & Mimikyu GX SR SA from Tag Bolt (103/095), currently listed at ¥608,740 (~$3,829) PSA 10 — the highest price of the twelve cards featured here.
